Petra is the Nabataean city carved into sandstone in southern Jordan, entered from Wadi Musa through the Siq. The Treasury (Al-Khazneh) is the first monument at the canyon's end. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Jordan's best-known archaeological park.
A roughly 1.2 km narrow canyon is the main foot approach. Horse, cart, and later donkey offers start at the gate; none are required.
Al-Khazneh faces you at the Siq exit. The interior is not a museum you tour; the facade is the visit.
Ad Deir is a steep extra walk (800-plus steps is the usual figure). Budget most of an afternoon if you add it.
Tickets are sold at the visitor centre and through official Jordan tourism channels. The Jordan Pass can include Petra; read the pass rules. Petra by Night is a separate evening product on selected nights.
Tombs, a theatre, and colonnaded street continue well beyond the Treasury. The Treasury photo is not the whole site.
From gate to Treasury is already a hike. Carry water. Summer afternoons are harsh.
A single Treasury-and-back visit is possible. The Monastery and High Place of Sacrifice need a longer day or a second ticket day.
How far is the Treasury from the gate?
On foot through the Siq, plan around 2-3 km one way including the approach, and more than 30 minutes each way at an easy pace.
Do I need a guide?
Not required. Licensed guides wait at the entrance. Agree terms before you start.
Is Petra by Night included?
No. It is a separate, limited-night event. Check the official calendar.
Jordan Pass?
Often includes a set number of consecutive Petra days. Read the pass you buy; unused days do not always work the way blogs claim.
Petra flourished as a trading city of the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago, later under Rome. Flash floods, earthquakes, and time emptied it. Johann Ludwig Burckhardt described it to a European audience in 1812.
Today it is Jordan's flagship archaeological park. Ticket products (one day, two day, three day) exist because the site is too large for a single Treasury selfie stop.
